Baker X @ Orchard Central is a project to give budding home-baking entrepreneurs the opportunity to trial with a physical outlet and scale their business.
Through this initiative, Far East Organization aims to encourage the entry of new brands and enhance the business ecosystem in Singapore by providing customers with more choices and encouraging greater diversity.
Bakers work in a fully equipped baking studio and café, a physical space provided to them at no cost, over a period of 2 to 6 weeks to bake and sell. Our third baker is Mon Cerise Patisserie, operating from 8 to 20 February 2022. We spoke to the founder, Cherry Cheuk, to find out more about her baking journey.
Mon Cerise Patisserie was founded by Cherry Cheuk, who made a big move from her corporate job in London to pursue her passion of becoming a pastry chef. This decision led her to study at Le Cordon Bleu London, where she learnt classic French Pastry skills. Following this, she also worked at the 5-star Langham hotel in London as a pastry chef, where she learnt precision, attention to detail and most importantly, how to understand ingredients and create a philosophy in each creation.
To Cherry, the most important thing about pastry besides the way it looks, is the taste. For instance, if the cake’s flavour is strawberry and basil, then those flavours must be distinct and distinguishable when biting into it. Mon Cerise Patisserie also prides themselves on creating pastries with less sugar and fat whilst maintaining incredible flavour.
It has always been Cherry’s dream to open a brick-and-mortar shop, and Baker X would be a great opportunity to experience what that would be like! It also allows Cherry to get wider exposure and be closer to her customers. Being a home baker means missing out on the important interaction with the end consumers.
Cherry likes chatting with her customers and getting their feedback, she hopes to get a better understanding of the operational side of running a physical shop and build her confidence as a business owner. She would also love to raise awareness of her brand and perhaps even seek out a business partner to open something together in the future! This would be a dream come true for Cherry.
Mon Cerise Patisserie will be offering their Les Petites Tarts from Mondays to Fridays and the Les Petite Tarts & the Taste of Mon Cerise (individual sized cakes) on Saturdays and Sundays. Beautiful and flavourful bakes will be on the menu as usual, but with a new packaging for Baker X, which will be perfect for gifting and Valentine’s Day. And of course, Mon Cerise Patisserie will also be running a Valentine’s Day special. Be sure to check out their Happy Hour tarts promotion of 3 Les Petites Tarts for $12 (U.P $13.50) from Mondays to Fridays, 2pm - 5pm only!
