Baker X @ Orchard Central is a project to give budding home-baking entrepreneurs the opportunity to trial with a physical outlet and scale their business.
Through this initiative, Far East Organization aims to encourage the entry of new brands and enhance the business ecosystem in Singapore by providing customers with more choices and encouraging greater diversity.
Bakers work in a fully equipped baking studio and café, a physical space provided to them at no cost, over a period of 2 to 6 weeks to bake and sell. Our second baker is Browned Butter Bakehouse, operating from 11 to 30 January 2022. We spoke to the founder, Julie Ng, to find out more about her baking journey.

Browned Butter Bakehouse is a home-based business offering a range of daily standard menu bakes from cinnamon rolls to macarons, customised occasion cakes, to omakase-style pà‚tisserie worthy desserts, best shared around the table over good conversation with friends and loved ones.
The core of Browned Butter Bakehouse strives to move away from the notion that desserts are always only one dimensional - sweet. They incorporate balanced flavours, both classic and inventive into their bakes, besides playing with textures and sensations.
And above all, they believe that everything should be made with heart work and quality ingredients. They feel that food is a love language, and that one can taste emotions through food. They want that with their bakes – to not just be a mass producer of the mainstream desserts, but to create bakes that are made with passion and love.

This project came very timely for Julie as she’s in the midst of transitioning from home baking to finding a physical space for operations. Julie felt that the idea behind this project is in line with the next stage(s) of how she’s looking to expand her business.
With Baker X, Julie can have risk-free exposure to a real on-demand crowd and a feel of what it is like to run her own café. She hopes to have a better understanding and feel of what it is like to run a physical store, and at the same time get more brand exposure and awareness from the public. Julie mentioned, “I hope existing customers and regulars can come down, grab a coffee, a bite and show some support. It would be nice to get some time to interact with them, which a home-based business does not necessarily allow.”.

Browned Butter Bakehouse will be offering a combination of standard menu items and some special desserts, including tarts, cinnamon rolls, whipped ganache popsicles and more – in flavours such as Browned Butter Cinnamon Rolls, buttery LUXE Tart, Passionfruit Meringue Tart, and creamy Snow White Popsicle.
